About The Endurance Scholarship

The Endurance Scholarship

The Endurance Scholarship is a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior at North Marion High School who has demonstrated persistence, patience, and determination in the face of longstanding obstacles to their education.  The student must be planning on enrolling in post-secondary education by the fall of their graduating year.

The amount of the scholarship award will be determined by the money raised by Jonathan Barrett who will attempt to complete the 50 mile Capital Peak Ultra-Marathon on April 28th, 2012.  Pledges per mile completed will be collected, and the sum raised will constitute the scholarship award.

Jonathan Barrett will personally solicit pledges, but any student who wishes to apply for the award must also solicit pledges.  A minimum of five (5) pledges is required for an applicant to be considered eligible for the scholarship.  The pledge amount is not a determining factor.  Participation in the solicitation of pledges is mandatory though.

In the event that more than $2,500.00 is raised, the amount over the $2,500.00 will be applied to the next year’s scholarship award.

The recipient of the scholarship will be chosen by an independent panel of three individuals who will read the scholarship applications.  Neither Mr. Barrett nor any employee of the school district will be a deciding factor in the decision.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship award, the applicant must do the following things:
1.      Complete the written application
2.      Provide a personal recommendation that attests to the applicant’s character and qualities
3.      Solicit a minimum of five pledges per mile run
4.      Be enrolled in a post-secondary educational program (i.e. 4 year college, culinary school, community college, trade school, or the like) by the fall of 2012.

The scholarship award will be paid directly to the program that the student will be attending once admission has been verified.

The application deadline is April 19th, 2012.

Jonathan Barrett will be blogging about the preparation for the ultra-marathon.  You can follow his progress by logging on to the website below.  He will update the site regularly to relate his triumphs and struggles as he prepares to run the ultra-marathon.

The website also includes information about how to pledge as well as how to simply make a donation to the scholarship.
